Kat Von D is a famous tattoo artist and the star of the popular T.V. series ‘L.A. Ink’ on TLC. She’s one of the most talented artists in the tattoo industry, also known for her successful makeup range. Included in this makeup range is the Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation line, which is available for all skin tones. This heavy-duty foundation claims to effectively cover up tattoos.

According to their marketing, Lock-It Foundation is effective in giving your face gorgeous, full coverage that remains flawless without needing further touching-up throughout the day. Further, the product features transfer-resistant wear. This means the foundation stays on the applied region without rubbing off on your clothes or someone else. Their online caption: “Just remember, a little Lock-It goes a long way” got us motivated to opt for this product and test its effectiveness in tattoo coverage.

How successful is this foundation at covering up your tattoo(s), and that too, completely? That’s the purview of this review, after considering the following popular Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation shades:

We’ve put these seven Kat Von D Tattoo Foundations to the test, combined our research with an analysis of numerous customer reviews, and compared the results with the performance of other competing products. Kat Von D Tattoo cover up Foundation Reviews

Every tattoo enthusiast loves to get inked with a tattoo design that means so much to them on a personal, spiritual, or aesthetic level. But, what if you wanted to hide your tattoo(s) for an interview, family gathering, or otherwise, temporarily? A quick, breathable, and effective fix is what you’d need, and this particular foundation claims to be just that.

Exceptional coverage for up to 24 hours is one feat; achieving it while retaining a smooth, striking finish is another. The Kat Von Tattoo cover-up foundation is formulated with 21 percent pigment, which grants it the ability to give you bold skin coverage through a selection of 30 available matte finish shades, each suiting a particular skin tone. The proprietary pigments try to cover up tattoos of all styles. And, they do so with success while granting you that smooth, striking finish for a natural look.

Furthermore, you enjoy 24-hour wear and transfer resistance. This kind of long-lasting effect doesn’t just mean the cream won’t rub off on your clothes or others, which it does, yet the foundation is rich enough to be water-proof and fade-proof as well. Those benefits are owing to the raw materials that, along with the premium silicone elastomers and silicone esters, bind the mix together to form the rich, effective formula. Any residual oil is absorbed through natural polymers, giving the coverage area a soft, matte finish. Moreover, the skin is left smooth and hydrated by the added emollients, giving it a velvety texture.

The creamy consistency helps correct discolorations, which is a boon when it comes to hiding colorful or dark tattoos. Also, blemishes are concealed equally well. And, you won’t have to worry about a shine remaining.

The quality of the packaging is praiseworthy. The foundation comes in an airless chamber, giving no chance for contamination while the rich consistency is maintained. Each time you pump the dispenser, you get a fresh, precisely measured quantity of the foundation on your palm. The formula is tested to be safe. It is formulated without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. As a tip, the secret lies in the application. If you don’t apply the formula properly over the skin area, it can look weird (patchy and flakey)!

What We Liked

  • Full-coverage, high-pigment, and maximum tattoo coverage.
  • 30 matte finish shades to select from. One of which will be an exact match to your skin tone.
  • You get a flawless matte finish while your skin breathes normally.
  • The matte effect works well on oily skin.
  • Transfer resistance.
  • Water-proof/fade-proof.
  • Fresh looking, long-lasting coverage (up to 24-hours).
  • Buildable coverage.
  • Free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances.
  • Ergonomic, hygienic pump dispenser.
  • Vegan-friendly (completely free of animal-derived ingredients).
  • Works synergistically with specific Kat Von D’s Lock-It beauty products (namely the Featherweight Primer, Lock-It Concealer, and Lock’ N Load Setting Mist).

What We Didn’t Like

  • Like most foundations, it doesn’t work well in very hot, humid conditions.
  • You’ll need to apply a moisturizer first if your skin is very dry. On very dry skin, a cakey effect can result.
  • This formula is very quick to dry. It’s recommended you apply small quantities at a time. Otherwise, it will smudge.
  • A bit on the expensive side. But, for a high-end foundation that requires a couple of pumps (less quantity) to do the job, it’s well worth it!

Critical Analysis – KAT VON D Tattoo cover up foundation

Through our testing, we discovered that the more layers of the foundation you apply, the better the coverage on darker tattoos. However, the layers shouldn’t be excessively thick. For tattoos that are subdued in color, rather than black or heavily colored, the foundation works even more wonderfully without needing too many pumps of the cream.

The consistency is on the thicker side, though fairly easy to spread. You need to ensure you apply it fast due to the quick-drying nature of the foundation. Even if you have oily skin, you won’t have to worry about the foundation layer settling down ineffectively on the skin. The matte finish works well on oily skin. Yet, if you have exceptionally dry skin, you’d be better off applying a moisturizer preceding the foundation layer. If you live in extremely humid conditions, this foundation won’t be effective, though it does fair better than most other products in the market, even under those conditions.

The foundation remains intact even after you splash water on it; hence, it lives up to its claim of being water-proof. It is also incredible at transfer resistance and being fragrance-free. The packaging — the pumpable bottle — is a travel-friendly shape and easy to use and carry around. The wide variety of available shades, full coverage, and matte finish make the Kat Von D tattoo cover-up foundation your reliable, perfect companion for all those special occasions when you need your tattoo(s) hidden well. The only time you’d want to stay away from this product is when the conditions are unbearably hot and humid, and you’re sweating profusely. But again, no cover-up foundation works well in that scenario.

Final Thoughts

This tattoo covers up the foundation ticks all the checkboxes. Not with full marks, of course, because no foundation can cover up a tattoo in really hot, humid weather. Nevertheless, it is a high-end product that gives most other competing products a big run for their money. You’d love to wear it to cover up your tattoos or during the conventional face makeup process, especially when there’s no time for touch-ups!
